Dr. Gregory P. Kalemkerian

Dr. Gregory P. Kalemkerian said there’s no single right way to treat a lung-cancer patient. Instead, it’s important to tailor treatment to the individuals based what on they want to achieve. As the co-director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Care Center’s thoracic oncology program and a professor of medical oncology, Kalemkerian has taken a special interest in lung cancers, including mesothelioma.

Kalemkerian has dedicated his career to researching ways to treat mesothelioma and lung cancer. He is acutely interested in molecular-targeted therapy and utilizes the most advanced treatments that could potentially lead to a cure. He said it is important for patients to take an active role in their care, including eating well, drinking fluids and remaining active because there is no one-size-fits-all treatment.

Kalemkerian’s research has led to innovative findings for the future of mesothelioma treatment. In the past years, he and his colleagues have looked at a variety of topics, including the use of chemotherapy and imaging in the disease.

It’s common for workers in these factories to come into close and ongoing contact with asbestos. In addition, office workers and family members are at risk for exposure as well. Anyone who has a connection to the automotive industry in Michigan could have the potential for asbestos exposure.
