Dr. Dong Shin
For more than 30 years, Dr. Dong Shin has focused his research on finding new treatments and developing preventative therapies for head, neck and lung cancers, including mesothelioma. He has received numerous awards for the advances he’s made in the field.
Shin is the director of clinical and translational cancer prevention programs and a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also the director of Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute chemotherapy program and co-director of the center’s Lung and Aerodigestive Tract Malignancies Program. He is the university’s Frances Kelly Blomeyer Distinguished Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and director of the Head and Neck Cancer Specialized Programs Of Research Excellence (SPORE).
In the past decades, Shin’s research has focused on several areas:
- Using nanotechnology to deliver lifesaving drugs to patients
- Developing new therapies and protocols for mesothelioma
- Establishing models that will show the genesis of cancer
- Developing biological markers for head, neck and lung cancers
Shin is also involved in several clinical trials that show great promise. In 2005, he began a Phase III trial for patients with advanced pleural mesothelioma.

What is Shin’s background
Born and raised in South Korea, Shin attended Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, graduating in 1975. He continued his education at Yonsei University Hospital and then Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Upon completing his residency in 1985 and a fellowship at the University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center, he served as a faculty member at MD Anderson and the University of Pittsburg. In 2003, he joined the faculty at Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute.
Some of his more recent studies include using novel therapies in the management of cancer and a Phase II study of several type of chemotherapy for locally advanced carcinomas of the head and neck. His clinical areas of interest are esophageal cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, thymoma, thyroid cancer and mesothelioma.
